Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals and Polyclinics organized Continuous Medical Education (CME) on “Evaluation and Management of Osteoporosis” on Wednesday 5th September 2018 at Sheraton Oman Hotel, Muscat. More than 150 doctors from Muscat and other regions participated in the event. The CME was accredited by Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) with 2 credited points to speaker and 1 credit point to participants.
Mr. Abdul Latheef, Managing Director, Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals and Polyclinics speaking in his welcome address reiterated the commitment and legacy of the group in imparting advanced healthcare education as an integral part of its healthcare services. He mentioned that CME’s organized by Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals and Polyclinics have always been the value adds to the doctors of Sultanate of Oman and the group’s most important contribution to the private healthcare system of the Sultanate. He welcomed all doctors; more than 150 in numbers, from different specializations especially Orthopaedics, Gynecology, Neurology, General Medicine, Anaesthesia, Urologists, etc who come across such Osteoporotic patients every day. Mr. Latheef laid emphasis that such knowledge adds will definitely help establishing most apt line of treatment for the patients by doctors.
The main speaker of the event, Dr. Ramesh Gomez, MD, DM, Specialist Endocrinologist at the group’s Al Khoud Hospital (JCI Accredited) in his presentation presented the multi-dimensional approach required to treat the patients of Osteoporosis (a condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of bone mass). He said 1 out of 2 women and 1 out of 5 men above the age of 50 are suspected to be Osteoporotic and shockingly 70% of such patients are undiagnosed and ignorant of their condition due to lack of knowledge and right approach. He said certain modification in the approach can help treat such patients like improving their Calcium & Vitamin D Levels, quitting smoking, increasing physical activities, posture corrections and improving bone mass. He requested all doctors to follow the symptoms and establish a right diagnostic approach to diagnose Osteoporosis patient to prevent them from fractures or broken bones especially in elderly. Dr. Gomez being the highly qualified and experienced endocrinologist of the region is well acclaimed in his field. He regularly treats such patients with his unique patient centric approach. CME Interactive session was highly participative, this session was moderated by the Group CEO of Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals and Polyclinics, Dr. Shafeek Muhammmed. Gynaecologists, Orthopaedicians, Anaesthetics and General Medicine Specialists posted scientific questions to Dr. Ramesh Gomez who answered them well with case references. Dr. Mohammed, being qualified and experience anesthetic as well, put light on the right approach which Anaesthetics should established in giving anaesthesia to such patients in surgical cases.
On this occasion, Dr. V T Vinod, Managing Director Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals and Polyclinics unveiled “Diabetes & Hypertension Record Book”. The book was unveiled in lines with the launch of first of its kind club in the region – Diabetes and Hypertension Club.
